House

Exposition with art by Martin de Jong

Ten international artists have been invited to create new works in which they reflect on the following questions: What does “House” mean to us in daily life or in an idealistic sense?

Can we visualize the socio-economic, political, or historical factors that influence our relationship with the house we live in? What turns a house into a home? Is a home still a physical place, or can it be replaced by a digital homepage in the cloud? What are the consequences of losing our home and being (voluntarily or forcibly) detached from it?

What do you leave behind?

For the first time in my new home!
I never knew the previous residents. I only encounter what they left behind. Did they leave in a hurry because they had to?
Perhaps it was too painful to cherish their belongings one last time.
Or are these simply remnants that have lost their function?
A small inner world that reveals a past.

With this abandoned house, I have a new opportunity to create assemblages that also carry a deeper personal weight from the previous owner.
In this place, where a life has come to a halt, the leftover materials become the starting point for new work.
They already hold a history and provide a rich foundation for compositions that highlight the beauty of impermanence.
The colours, the curtains, the peeling paint and the signs of use tell stories that go beyond their original purpose.
By applying minimalism, I aim to emphasize the essence of the house.
The viewer is invited to pause and reflect on the traces of the life that once took place here.
These works form a reflection on transience and the beauty of the everyday.
They invite contemplation on memories and reveal how something new can emerge from the old.
A tribute to this house, its place, its time, and its former inhabitants.
